President's Greeting - Updated June 2008

Dear Members and Colleagues:

With deep respect and admiration, The Offshore Institute announces that a wonderful man, Walter H. Diamond, and our dear friend, has passed and the international community has lost one of its most enthusiastic spokespersons and leaders. In his memoir, Walter, a world-renowned tax authority, author, and economist, shared with us his life lessons and insightful observations on great men he has met and known.

No one can tell the glorious story of Walter's life better than he did in his memoir, Walter H. Diamond tells how his prestigious career evolved and how he came to recognize and cultivate personal and intellectual traits that were crucial to achievement, such as perseverance, memory, and affinity for foreigners.

Walter's work as a bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury led to new challenges in World War II. As an officer in the U.S. Navy he was involved in six military operations in both the Pacific and Europe, including D-day. He was asked to engineer the safe return of 1,800 survivors of a sunken flotilla. As trade and investment adviser at the U.N., he helped more than 100 world leaders-from kings to presidents, prime ministers to finance ministers-draft plans for fighting poverty. In his book, Walter tells what he feels separates the great from the weak, which leaders have impressed him most, and why. Finally, he offered a revelatory assessment on terrorism, and a feasible route to world peace through trade.

Here are some of the reviews on his memoir, which should be required reading for anyone considering a career in the international offshore world.

Walter will be missed by many, but his legacy is well established as a path for us, devoted to the international mission, to follow into the future that he assessed so well.

Respectfully,

E. Jerry James, on behalf of The Offshore Institute
